UAlbany Economists at Southern Economic Association Conference
UAlbany faculty, PhD alumni, and current PhD students attended and presented their work at the Southern Economic Association conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida during November 19-21.

William O'Dea donates to endow Helen Horowitz Award
UAlbany alumnus William O’Dea ’88 donates $25K to endow The Helen Horowitz Award for Outstanding Teaching to honor his mentor and friend, Professor Helen Horowitz, who came to Albany in 1960 and became one of the most respected undergraduate teachers at the University.

Econ Professor Wins Prize for Paper Forecasting Recession
Economics Professor Kajal Lahiri won the prestigious Edmund A. Mennis Contributed Paper Award of the National Association of Business Economics for a paper using new prediction models and co-authored by former PhD student Cheng Yang.

Mapping Innovation, Output in the Publishing Life Cycle
A first-of-its-kind study, co-authored by economists at the University at Albany, shows that scientific creativity peaks earlier among biomedical researchers, with quality declining as authors get older.

Professor Lahiri Wins the 2022 Edmund A. Mennis Award
Professor Kajal Lahiri's paper with a former PhD student Cheng Yang is selected as the winner of the 2022 Edmund A. Mennis Contributed Paper Award. The award comes with a cash prize and a commemorative plaque.
The award-winning paper is entitled as "ROC Approach to Forecasting Recessions Using Daily Yield Spreads." It will be published in an upcoming issue of National Association for Business Economics' journal. There will be a dedicated session to present the paper at the National Association for Business Economics Annual Meeting, which is held on October 9-11 in Chicago.

Joint Project by Professors Win NIH Grant
A joint research project by Professor Pinka Chatterji and Professor Chun-Yu Ho is awarded a research grant of %150,000 by National Institute of Health. The research project studies the effect of decline of hospital-based obstetric care in rural areas in the U.S. on maternal health. Their research project is expected to have important policy implications on hospital and medical industry.

Professor Takayama Receives Murata Science Foundation Research Grant
Professor Haruka Takayama is selected as a recipient of the Murata Science Foundation Research Grant. The Murata Science Foundation funds 2,960,000 Japanese Yen (which is over 20,000 US dollars) for Professor Takayama's research project. In the project, she studies how responsible sourcing initiatives by multinational fashion companies affect the environmental efficiency of local Bangladeshi firms.
