International Baccalaureate (IB) Credit
To receive credit, students should work with their high school guidance office to ensure that an official IB transcript is sent upon graduation to UAlbany’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions or Office of International Admissions.
Students with IB Diploma
UAlbany will award up to 30 credits to students who have completed the requirements for an IB Diploma with a cumulative score of at least 30 — including both Standard Level and Higher Level exams — and no score lower than a 4 (satisfactory).
Credits for students with an IB diploma will be awarded as follows:
12 to 24 credits, with assigned course credit equivalents, on a course-by-course basis for Higher Level courses completed with a score from 4 (satisfactory) to 7 (excellent)
6 to 18 credits, assigned as elective credit, for completing the remaining Standard Level courses and Extended Essay requirement
Students without IB Diploma
In addition, the University at Albany will consider for credit and/or placement on a course-by-course evaluation those IB subjects completed at the Standard and Higher Levels with a score of 4 or higher.
The following lists the UAlbany equivalents for students who participate in an IB curriculum at their high school.

College Courses
UAlbany accepts transfer credits from other colleges and universities. A grade of a C- or higher is required.
Use the Transfer Course Equivalency Portal to check whether credits from other institutions will transfer to UAlbany.
This database includes transfer equivalencies previously approved by UAlbany. Courses not included in the database may still be awarded transfer credit but may require a course description or syllabus for approval.
Additional Credit for Prior Learning Opportunities
UAlbany students can earn academic credit for work experience, professional certification and licensing programs, military education and service, non-credit coursework and more. Learn more about Credit for Prior Learning.
Transfer Credit Appeal
If, after working with your advisor, you still believe that decisions about equivalencies are in error, you may submit a petition to UAlbany’s Campus Transfer Representative by completing a Transfer Credit Appeal. You will receive a written response within 15 business days once the Campus Transfer Representative has received the form and all required information.
More Information on Transferring Credit
You will receive an estimated number of credits approved for transfer in your UAlbany acceptance letter. Note: You must submit all official college transcripts and test scores for your credits to be evaluated.
Once your enrollment deposit has been received, you can also access your degree audit through MyUAlbany, our main student portal.
And when you first register, you’ll receive a tentative evaluation of course credits and degree progress, which will be updated during your Transfer Advisement and Orientation.
The number of accepted transfer credits determines your class standing (or class year):
- First-year (freshman): Fewer than 24 credits
- Sophomore: 24 to 55 credits
- Junior: 56 to 87 credits
- Senior: 88 or more credits
Note: Class standing does not necessarily mean a student is on schedule within their major or minor’s sequence, particularly for transfer students entering combined programs or technical programs. Review the Undergraduate Bulletin for more information.
