Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do I apply for housing, and am I required to live on campus?
To receive an assignment, all students must apply for housing at UAlbany. New students must complete all immunization and health requirements before they can apply for housing.
UAlbany requires most undergraduate students to live on campus during their first two years of study. Learn more about the University’s housing requirements. Eligible students may apply for a housing exemption.
Any student who does not cancel their housing before apartments and residence halls open for the Fall 2026 semester is liable for the entire 2026-2027 Academic Year contract. Review housing calendars.
If needed, students can request a room change once the fall semester begins.
When can I expect my housing assignment for Fall 2026?
Assignment emails will be sent by Friday, August 7, 2026, to all students with a final housing assignment.
Students who submitted waitlist applications or who submitted housing applications later in the summer may receive an assignment email after August 7, 2026, as space becomes available.
Note: Once a student is assigned a housing space, it may take up to five business days for the housing charges to appear on the student's billing account. Charges will not appear immediately following the housing assignment.
Once you receive your housing assignment, visit the Housing Options page to learn about available amenities and access other details.
Great Dane Apartments are new this year, and students will also be assigned to Alumni Quad.
Does Residential Life guarantee housing for new students?
First-year students (freshmen)
Housing is guaranteed for incoming first-year students who would not otherwise be able to attend without living on campus.
Note: Due to the popularity of the residential communities and size of the Fall 2026 class, first-year students living within 50 miles of campus who applied very late in the summer may not be provided with an assignment.
Transfer students
UAlbany cannot guarantee housing on campus for all incoming transfer students this year. We will make our best efforts on a first come, first served, basis through the housing application and waitlist process.
What is a temporary, increased assignment?
Some first-year students (freshmen) will be placed in temporary, increased housing for the Fall 2026 semester.
Residents placed in an Increased Assignment receive a 20% room rate reduction each week until they are offered a normal capacity room.
