About Microcredentials

about-microcredentials

What are microcredentials?

What are microcredentials?

Whether you’re a working professional or current student, microcredentials will help you develop relevant and demonstrable skills — giving you an edge in a competitive job market.

Microcredentials at UAlbany are a collection of courses and certificates that help learners build in-demand skills and competencies, which are documented by digital badges. Being able to clearly articulate your skills means you’ll be better positioned to advance in your career or on your academic pathway. Some for-credit microcredentials even count toward certificates or degrees.

Our programs are developed using established faculty governance processes and endorsed by UAlbany, so the skills you learn are portable, meaningful and high quality. The programs are offered at the undergraduate or graduate level, or as professional and continuing education. Many are conveniently offered online.

What types of microcredentials does UAlbany offer?

UAlbany's microcredentials are offered as either for-credit or not-for-credit.

Not-for-credit Microcredentials

Develop new, relevant and demonstrable skills that can give you an edge in a competitive job market. These professional courses allow for lifelong learning, with a focus on up-skilling and re-skilling.

They are typically offered for a certain number of hours on a weekly schedule or as intensive academies both online and on campus. They are mostly offered for all learners with open enrollment.

For-credit Microcredentials

Showcase skills and competencies to future employers and graduate schools. For-credit microcredentials are typically a certain number of credit courses bundled to highlight specific skills and competencies that stack into certificate and degree programs.

Only degree-seeking and non-degree UAlbany students may enroll in for-credit microcredentials. Current students should talk with their academic advisor before enrolling. If you are not a current student but would like to enroll, apply for undergraduate non-degree study or graduate non-degree study

What are digital badges?

What are digital badges?

Each time you complete a microcredential, you’ll also earn a digital badge.

Digital badges can be shared with current and potential employers and on social media to demonstrate your completion of a microcredential. Digital badges for UAlbany microcredentials are issued on the online credentialing platform Credly.

These badges are more than just a visual icon — they're evidence that you’ve learned specific professional skills. Badges link to the actual work you completed to earn the microcredential. Each badge earned is another chance to digitally share and celebrate an accomplishment with your network.

How do I earn a microcredential?

Step 1: Register for a Microcredential

Explore the Microcredential Catalog to find the right program for you.

Each program’s page includes a Request Information or Join the Waitlist button, which leads to a web form. Complete that form and our team will be in touch regarding registration.

Step 2: Complete the Microcredential

PaCE or the University department that offers the microcredential will notify you when you've completed all requirements. Soon after, you'll receive an email invitation to accept your digital badge and create an account on the Credly website.

Step 3: Share your Digital Badge

Using your Credly account, you can also share your badge on Facebook, X, LinkedIn, XING and WhatsApp, or share it via link or embed. You are also able to download and print the badge. Visit the Credly Help Center for instructions.

Badges cannot be shared unless they are public. You can change your privacy settings on Credly by clicking your profile icon, selecting “Settings” and then clicking “Privacy & Security.” There, you will be able to make your profile publicly visible or make it private. To make a badge private, click on the badge, select “More” and then click “Make Badge Private.”

How much does a microcredential cost?

How much does a microcredential cost?

The cost of a microcredential is listed on the individual program page. We offer both not-for-credit and for-credit options.

Non-credit microcredentials at UAlbany will be offered in a variety of affordable options based on content and learner preferences. New York State residents and UAlbany alumni will be able to take programs at a discounted rate.

Financial aid can be applied to credit-bearing courses for matriculated (degree-seeking) students if the courses fit into an approved program of study or if the student still has elective credits available. Students should meet with their academic advisor and the Office of Financial Aid to determine whether a course that includes a microcredential will be covered by financial aid.

Many employers will also reimburse employees for educational programs that help workers learn new skills.
