Learn how the semiconductor industry works with this intensive, highly specialized course from the University at Albany’s Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy faculty experts.
This eight-week microcredential course is designed for professionals in finance, insurance and related fields, and covers key components of the technical, economic and political foundations of the semiconductor industry.
The course will address the various policy and economic issues regarding semiconductor development and use, as well as existing and emergent technology and product fields.
Learners will explore the political and economic challenges related to their supply chain and production, and explore the local and global impact of the semiconductor industry.
Program Overview
By 2030, one in four American-made chips will be manufactured in and around upstate New York. There are more than 156 semiconductor and supply chain companies thriving across New York today and employing more than 34,000 New Yorkers — with more than $124 billion in new investments from leading chipmakers like Micron and GlobalFoundries.
The course draws on professional training materials and pedagogies developed by Rockefeller’s Project on International Security, Commerce, and Economic Statecraft (PISCES) team of faculty and experts.
The course is interdisciplinary, drawing on the team’s technical knowledge of dual-use semiconductors, as well as its knowledge of strategic economic sectors, compliance with export control, and the proliferation of financing laws and regulations.

Who should attend?
This course is designed for business professionals who want to understand the semiconductor sector and who will provide business-related services, such as finance, insurance, etc., to the industry.
What to Expect
The format is a highly interactive, eight-week hybrid experience. The first and last sessions will held in-person at UAlbany, while the six intermediary sessions will be held live online in Zoom sessions.
Participants will receive readings to complete, as well as occasional short videos to watch, outside of class. Sessions will rely on reading assignments, active learning exercises, and guest lectures by policy and scientific practitioners in the field and writing assignments.
Participants who successfully complete this microcredential will receive a completion certificate and a Credly badge to share on social media.
