CANCELED: Call for Papers for SIGH Conference due by March 20, 2020
The Sexuality Intersectionality Graduate Hangout (SIGH) 2020 conference theme, “Conflict, Consequences, and Beyond: An Interdisciplinary Conference on Systems of Violence and Feminist Resistance” seeks to cultivate a dialogue on the theoretical understanding of violence, historical and contemporary acts of violence, the dissemination of violence in national and transnational spaces, and the politics/poetics of resistance. Therefore, we invite participants from all (inter)disciplinary backgrounds to critically examine the rhetorics of violence, and furthermore, to think beyond such rhetorics—to imagine new and liberatory ways of living.

Toni Morrison Film Panel at Writer's Institute Includes WGSS Chair
WGSS Chair Janell Hobson and Affiliated Faculty, music professor Kyra Gaunt, are part of a panel discussion following the film screening on January 24. This is the first in a series of commemorative events for the late author (1931-2019) who once taught at the University at Albany. The next event is a special exhibit of Morrison's time at UAlbany, which will launch on her birthday, February 18, in the Science Library.

WGSS Alumna Awkwafina Wins Historic Golden Globe Award
Awkwafina, or Nora Lum, graduated from UAlbany in 2011 with a degree in women’s studies and journalism. Awkwafina became the first Asian-American woman to win “Best Actress in Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy” at the Golden Globes for her role in “The Farewell.” Read the News 10 story

Harriet Tubman Pop-Up Exhibit Commemorates 170th Anniversary of Her Escape
The Harriet Tubman Pop-Up Exhibit at the Albany Barn took place on November 22, 2019. The exhibit was a collaborative public engagement across University at Albany, Albany Law School, and RPI. Students in the course “Race, Rape Culture, and the Law” contribute a detailed timeline exploring Tubman’s life. The event commemorated the 170th anniversary of Tubman’s escape from slavery.
