Some students have medical, psychological, or disability-related needs that impact their ability to live in campus housing or meet the University's on-campus residency requirement. Students seeking a housing accommodation, such as a release from the UAlbany housing license or an exemption from the on-campus residency requirement, may request consideration through the Disability Access & Inclusion Student Services (DAISS) Housing Accommodations process.
DAISS reviews each request individually to understand the student’s needs and determine whether a housing accommodation is appropriate. Students are encouraged to submit their request and supporting documentation as early as possible to allow sufficient time for review and coordination.
Step 1: Begin with DAISS
Students seeking a housing release or exemption for medical reasons must start by registering with DAISS and initiating a Housing Accommodation request.
Students requesting a housing accommodation, such as a release from the UAlbany housing license or an exemption from the University's on-campus residency requirement for medical or disability-related reasons, must first register with DAISS and submit a Housing Accommodation request. Please note that the review, determination, and implementation of housing accommodation requests may require about 5–7 weeks.
To begin:
- Start your request by visiting the DAISS Housing Accommodations page: DAISS Housing Accommodations
- Complete the DAISS registration process if you are not already registered.
- Log in to Accommodate and schedule an appointment with a DAISS Access Coordinator.
Step 2: Submit the DAISS Housing Accommodation Form
DAISS requires students and their licensed medical provider to complete the DAISS Housing Accommodation Documentation Form. This form is the primary documentation for the housing accommodation and provides details about the students’ medical or disability-related needs and the requested accommodation.
The form will ask your provider for information about:
- The nature of your medical or disability-related condition and how it creates a functional limitation
- How the condition impacts your ability to live on campus housing or meet the University’s on-campus residency requirement
- Any housing accommodation, adjustment, or support that should be considered as
- Why should a housing release or exemption be considered based on your medical or disability
Your current care plan and the length of time you have been working with your provider must be documented on the required form, which you will access and upload directly through Accommodate as part of your DAISS Housing Accommodation request.
DAISS will review the submitted documentation to determine if the student's medical or disability-related needs warrant a release from the housing license or an exemption from the University's on-campus residency requirement.
Step 3: Complete the Housing Release Form if you are requesting a release from the UAlbany housing license or an exemption from the University's on-campus residency requirement through DAISS.
Note: If you live in Empire Commons, you will be billed a $400 License Termination Fee.
