The newly established Student Philanthropy Fund selected The MoonCatcher Project and Youth FX as its inaugural winning nonprofit organizations. The Student Philanthropy Fund is a project of Dr. Susan Appe and launched in Spring 2019 in the PAD 527 Philanthropy and Civil Society graduate course at Rockefeller College.

ALBANY, N.Y. (June 18, 2019) — When the student content editor for a publication that assesses university excellence around the world contacted UAlbany for a political science student who could write a guide to the 2020 Presidential candidates, Dean and Professor R. Karl Rethemeyer of Rockefeller College had a ready choice in mind.
2018 UAlbany alum and current Public Administration grad student Austin Ostro knows all about the responsibilities and goals of public office, being the current SUNY Student Assembly president as well as a SUNY trustee.

Excellence Rewarded
J. Ramon Gil-Garcia received the University at Albany’s President’s Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Activities. Dr. Gil-Garcia is an associate professor in the Department of Public Administration and Policy and the research director of the CTG UAlbany.

Student Scholars and Leaders
SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson presented 210 SUNY students from across the state with the 2019 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. UAlbany had nine honorees, including four exceptional scholars from Rockefeller College: Alondra Berroa, Nicholas Gonzalez, Teniola Olafuyi, and Subha Tasnim.

Teacher Turnover and the Disruption of Teacher Staffing
Assistant Professor Lucy Sorenson co-authored an article for the Brookings Institution that highlights concerns related to the turnover of middle school teachers, including the financial costs on schools and districts and the effects on student achievement.
