Clothing

Be prepared for hot weather when you move into your residence hall or apartment in August. Most rooms do not have air conditioning.

You should also bring warm clothing and bedding, as the temperatures will start dropping in September and it may snow as early as late October.

However, don’t pack everything you own because space is limited in our residence halls. Students who can swap out clothing while they are home for Thanksgiving Break should consider doing so.

Don’t forget to bring:

  • Comfortable shoes

  • Athletic clothing and sports equipment

  • Raincoat, rain boots and umbrella

  • Winter coat, hat, gloves, scarf and boots

School Supplies
  • Laptop, computer and/or tablet, plus charging cables

What Not to Pack

The following items are not permitted in UAlbany’s residence halls:

  • LED strip lights and holiday lights: These type of lights are prohibited because they have the potential to cause a fire. Additionally, LED strip lights also peel the paint off the walls, which will result in wall damage.

  • Halogen lamps: These lamps are prohibited because they have the potential to cause a fire.

  • Microwaves, toaster ovens, air fryers or indoor grills: These items are prohibited because they have the potential to cause a fire. Microwaves are only allowed in residence halls if they are part of a rented MicroFridge unit.

    • Note: Freedom Apartment residents may bring one microwave per kitchen, as Freedom Apartments are not equipped with a microwave.

  • Space heaters or portable air conditioners: These items are prohibited because they have the potential to cause a fire.

  • Cinder blocks, bricks or other materials for raising beds: These items are prohibited because they may cause injury. Store-bought plastic bed riders are permitted.

  • Waterbeds or lofts: Only University-supplied loft configurations are acceptable. Waterbeds are prohibited

  • Pets: Tropical fish are the only pets permitted in the residence halls. Qualified service animals and emotional support animals must be registered and approved by the Disability Access and Inclusion Student Services.

  • Candles or incense: Open flames are prohibited inside residence halls because they have the potential to cause a fire.

  • Knives or any other weapons: Dangerous objects are not allowed inside residence halls, as they pose a threat to our community.

  • Alcohol, drugs and paraphernalia: The University adheres to all state and federal regulations for alcohol and drug use. Paraphernalia — such as bongs, pipes or empty cans/bottles — are not perceived as decorations and should not be brought to the University at Albany.

Room decorations are allowed but within limits:

  • Wall decorations may not exceed 10% of a wall's total surface area.
  • Fabrics — including sheets, fishnet, tapestry and fabric flags — used as decorations are prohibited.
  • Wall paneling, wallpaper, foam/noise acoustic wall coverings or similar coverings are also not permitted.
  • Combustible material is not allowed on ceilings or on the inside of any door.

Extension Cord & Power Strip Guidelines

Extension cords cannot be used as a substitute for fixed, permanent wiring.

They can be used temporarily (for example: while running a vacuum cleaner) but cannot be used as a fixed source of power. Extension cords can only be used for portable appliances.

For all intents and purposes, students should not possess or use extension cords in the residence halls.

Multi-plug adapters are not permitted, unless they are a power strip with overcurrent protection. Prohibited items include cube taps and unfused plug strips.

All power strips must be UL listed and labeled. They must be listed to UL 1363, “Standard for Relocatable Power Taps,” and be maintained in good condition.

Power strips cannot be run through doorways, windows or similar opening. They cannot be placed under rugs or similar coverings.

Power strips must be plugged directly into a permanently installed wall receptacle. Power strips can never be plugged into an extension cord or another power strip.

The ampere capacity of the power strips must meet at least the rated capacity of the portable appliances they are feeding.
