Pi Day, March Madness and Everyday Mathematics
March 14 — which this year marks both Pi Day (3.14) and the start of March Madness — offers an ideal opportunity to celebrate all things related to mathematics. Indeed, UAlbany's Department of Mathematics and Statistics includes faculty members who study a variety of topics that are integral to our everyday lives.
Professor Curry Secures Contract with NASA to Improve Space Communications
Math and Statistics Professor Justin Curry secured a five year contract sponsored by NASA Glenn Research Center to work on “TIMAEUS: Topologically Influenced Methods for Ad hoc, Evolving and Uncertain Systems” in an effort to use topological data analysis and sheaf theory to improve space communications. Congrats to Professor Curry!
Two Generations of Albany Alumni speak at International Conference, Publish Book
Professor Emeritus Lindsay Childs (Professor at UAlbany 1968-2012) and three of his UAlbany PhD students---Alan Koch, Tim Kohl and Rob Underwood---spoke at the Eighth Annual Conference on Hopf Algebras and Galois Module Theory. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the event was held online and featured participants from England, Spain, Italy, Germany and the US. The four speakers have since published a book related to the conference, titled: Hopf Algebras and Galois Module Theory.

5 Questions with Faculty: Mathematics Professor Cristian Lenart
Professor of Mathematics Cristian Lenart is an expert in the field of algebraic combinatorics. His goal, in a manner of speaking, is to build more accessible models for complex objects.
Lenart was recently awarded $200,000 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to continue his work in combinatorial representation theory and combinatorial algebraic geometry.
Eighth Maheshwari Colloquium
On Friday, April 12, 2019, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University at Albany will host its eighth Maheshwari Colloquium, endowed in honor of Man Mohan and Asha Devi Maheshwari by Raj Maheshwari, '83. The speaker will be Ken Ono, Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Mathematics at Emory University, and the title of his lecture is, “Why does Ramanujan, ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity,’ matter?” The colloquium will begin at 4:00 p.m. in Lecture Center 23. Refreshments will be served from 3:15 p.m. just outside the auditorium.
