Professor Ying Awarded Two NSF Grants in Machine Learning
In 2021 alone, Math and Statistics Professor Yiming Ying has been awarded two grants from the NSF: One from the NSF's program on computational mathematics for "New Studies of Learning with Stochastic Convex Optimization" (https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2110836) and the second grant is through the NSF's program on robust intelligence for "Robust Deep Learning with Big Imbalanced Data" (https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2110546). Congrats to Professor Ying!

Girls Inc. Eureka! Imparts Knowledge with Fun to Young STEM Students
For the fourth straight summer, the College of Arts & Sciences hosts Girls Inc. Eureka! program, with faculty from seven UAlbany departments imparting a love of STEM subjects to girls from the Capital Region.
Professor Milas Awarded NSF Grant in Representation Theory
Math and Statistics Professor Antun Milas has been awarded a grant from the NSF to study "Higher Depth in Representation Theory, Number Theory, and Quantum Topology" Congrats to Professor Milas!
Professor Feng Awarded NSF Grant to Connect Machine Learning with Biology
Math and Statistics Professor Yunlong Feng and Professor Alex Valm in the Department of Biological Sciences have been named PI and co-PI, respectively, on a collaborative research grant from the NSF to investigate the "Mathematical Foundation of Learning with Information-Theoretic Criteria from Non-Gaussian Data" Congrats to Professor Feng!

Pi Day, March Madness and Everyday Mathematics
March 14 — which this year marks both Pi Day (3.14) and the start of March Madness — offers an ideal opportunity to celebrate all things related to mathematics. Indeed, UAlbany's Department of Mathematics and Statistics includes faculty members who study a variety of topics that are integral to our everyday lives.
Professor Curry Secures Contract with NASA to Improve Space Communications
Math and Statistics Professor Justin Curry secured a five year contract sponsored by NASA Glenn Research Center to work on “TIMAEUS: Topologically Influenced Methods for Ad hoc, Evolving and Uncertain Systems” in an effort to use topological data analysis and sheaf theory to improve space communications. Congrats to Professor Curry!
Two Generations of Albany Alumni speak at International Conference, Publish Book
Professor Emeritus Lindsay Childs (Professor at UAlbany 1968-2012) and three of his UAlbany PhD students---Alan Koch, Tim Kohl and Rob Underwood---spoke at the Eighth Annual Conference on Hopf Algebras and Galois Module Theory. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the event was held online and featured participants from England, Spain, Italy, Germany and the US. The four speakers have since published a book related to the conference, titled: Hopf Algebras and Galois Module Theory.

5 Questions with Faculty: Mathematics Professor Cristian Lenart
Professor of Mathematics Cristian Lenart is an expert in the field of algebraic combinatorics. His goal, in a manner of speaking, is to build more accessible models for complex objects.
Lenart was recently awarded $200,000 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to continue his work in combinatorial representation theory and combinatorial algebraic geometry.
