Reframing African American History in the Post Civil War Era
Presenter: Professor E. Howard Ashford associate professor of history at the State University of New York (SUNY) Oneonta
Why is the Reconstruction era a defining part of the African American historical narrative? Mississippi Zion: The Struggle for Liberation in Attala County, 1865-1915 centers African American agency and power to examine the post-slavery period as a "Liberation Era" that demonstrates how advances in voting, education, landownership, community building, and productive interracial relationships served as the catalyst for the anti-Black Jim Crow apparatuses of late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. One must understand how Black power arose and continued to grow beyond the typical chronology of the Reconstruction Era (1865-1877) to better understand the evolution of Southern politics following slavery.
