When a group of scientists from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Earth Observing Laboratory visited campus last semester, Emily Paltz jumped at the opportunity to meet and network with them. She never imagined their conversation would lead to her climbing aboard a NOAA hurricane hunter.

ALBANY, N.Y. (July 9, 2019) – Three UAlbany undergraduate students spent their first days of summer far away from sandy beaches and scorching temperatures – instead conducting experiments around the second-largest ice sheet on the planet. The students were part of a large team of researchers, also including undergraduates from the University of Michigan and Virginia Tech, who recently returned from an 11-day expedition to the Greenland Ice Sheet.

ALBANY, N.Y. (July 2, 2019) – A recently documented long-term drying trend over the Congo Basin could have important implications on the future of the world’s second largest rainforest, according to a study published today in Nature Climate Change.

UAlbany is welcoming families from around the Capital Region to celebrate Earth Day by learning about the atmosphere, environmental science and sustainability through a series of hands-on demonstrations and activities. The 7th annual Family Earth Day, led by students, faculty and researchers in the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences (DAES) and the Office of Environmental Sustainability, will be held on Saturday, April 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in University Hall on the Uptown Campus. Local students, K-12, and their families are invited to attend, along with the UAlbany community. Last year’s event attracted more than 110 guests from 37 families.

The NYS Mesonet includes 126 standard weather stations located in every county of the state. The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) has partnered with the New York State Mesonet at UAlbany to acquire new solar power information that will improve the New York electric grid’s ability to integrate photovoltaic power.

Three Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences (DAES) and Atmospheric Science Research Center (ASRC) students recently won awards at the 99th Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Society. ASRC graduate student Lauriana Gaudet won an Outstanding Student Presentation Award in the 11th Symposium on Aerosol–Cloud–Climate Interactions. Her oral presentation was coauthored with her advisor, Dr. Kara Sulia, and was entitled, “Sensitivity of Lake-Effect Cloud Microphysical Processes to Ice Crystal Habit and Nucleation during OWLeS IOP4”.
