Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Professor and Chair Barbara Sutton will speak on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2022, 9:30-10:30 a.m., at the Brooklyn College Women’s and Gender Studies Program talk, "Green Wave: Feminisms in the Global South." Janell Hobson was the editor and wrote the introduction to Tubman 200: The Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Project, a month-long commemoration through Ms. magazine, in print and an interactive online site.

Call for Applications: Funding Opportunity for Prospective WGSS MA Students
The Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies is seeking candidates for a 2-year funding award to help coordinate the department’s Teaching Collective. The application deadline is February 15. In the first year, the awardee “shadows” the coordinator of the Teaching Collective, including participating in meetings of the Teaching Collective, in order to become familiar with the workings of the Collective. In the second year, the awardee receives a full graduate assistantship to coordinate the Teaching Collective and mentors the new Schulz awardee.

WGSS Associate Professor, Dr. Rajani Bhatia will be one of the featured speakers in a timely virtual panel on The Social, Ethical, and Legal Implications of Senate Bill 8 (Texas Abortion Law) on Monday, January 31 at 6 p.m. ET. Event hosted by Russell Sage College. The event is free, but advance registration is requested on the event website.

Abortion and Reproductive Rights: Academic and Policy Issues Surrounding the Current National Conversation
Faculty experts will discuss academic and policy issues related to abortion and reproductive rights, changes to the current political climate brought on by the recent Texas abortion laws and subsequent court rulings, and offer transnational and comparative perspectives to inform the conversation.

WGSS Alumna Hamidi Receives Feminist Change Agent Award for 2021
Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Alumna Yalda Nafiseh Hamidi (MA'2014) is the recent recipient of the Feminist Change Agent Award for 2021, given by the National Women's Studies Association (NWSA). The award is given for her innovative work as an assistant professor of gender and women's studies at Minnesota State University at Mankato working with the university's women's center to facilitate an 'Islamic Feminism Book Club.' The WGSS department is proud of her achievements. In addition to earning her MA at the University at Albany, she also received her PhD in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Stony Brook University, SUNY.

Abortion and Democracy Book Launch Event, October 18
WGSS core faculty Barbara Sutton and her co-editor and visiting scholar Nayla Luz Vacarezza will give a presentation and book signing for their timely edited collection Abortion and Democracy: Contentious Body Politics in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay (Routledge, 2021). The event takes place Monday, October 18, 12pm in LC 19 (Uptown Campus).
