The Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) has announced the winners of the 2023 Diversity Transformation Awards. Among this year’s recipients are projects aiming to support UAlbany’s BILPOC faculty, undocumented students and members of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as efforts to increase presence of historically underrepresented groups in UAlbany curricula and STEM departments.

UAlbany Researchers Receive New Funding for Study on Suicide Prevention Approaches
School of Education researchers have received a $306,000, three-year grant to undertake a new project aimed at reducing risk for suicide and substance use among UAlbany students experiencing health disparities.

Applebee Award Honors Research on Bilingual Reading Textbooks
The Arthur Applebee Award for Excellence in Research on Literacy, made possible through a UAlbany endowment established in memory of Distinguished Professor Arthur Applebee, is given annually to honor an outstanding and influential article in literacy research published in a refereed journal in the previous calendar year. Lucía Cárdenas Curiel and Leah Durán have been honored for their research this year.
UAlbany Launches Massive Artificial Intelligence Cluster Hire of 27 Faculty
The University at Albany will add an unprecedented 27 new faculty members specializing in artificial intelligence in the coming months, marking the next critical phase in the University’s ambitious plan to incorporate elements of AI teaching and research across all academic programs. The 27 new hires — the largest cluster hire in the University’s history — are among 49 new faculty members expected to join UAlbany next year and will help lay the foundation for the University’s new AI academy.
