Settling into Your Neighborhood
Living off-campus doesn’t mean you don’t have a community around you. Once your boxes are unpacked, it can be a good idea to learn a little more about your new neighborhood, and even to find ways to get involved.
- Meet your neighbors. This can be a great way to make connections to other students, or to community members.
- Learn where things are. Where’s the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, or gas station?
- Explore. Chances are, your neighborhood as some great spots to eat, shop, or even just walk.
- Get involved with your Neighborhood Association. For many students, this will be the Pine Hills Neighborhood Association, but you can find information for any neighborhood here.
Starting the Semester Off Right
Getting off on the right foot is crucial to making sure you have a successful semester. Planning ahead can help ensure you’re on the right track.
- Build a schedule. Figure out when you’ll have time to consistently set aside to study.
- Think about which classes might give you the most trouble. Start attending office hours before you fall behind. It’s easier to get ahead than to get caught up.
- Look at your syllabi. Do you have multiple big projects in different classes due at the same time? Start thinking about how you’ll break them all up.
- Set up a meeting with your Advisor. It’s never a bad idea to check in and make sure you’re on track to fulfill all your requirements.
Know the Code
Students living off-campus should remember that the Code of Conduct applies to both on- and off-campus behavior.
- Public intoxication, open containers, and possession and consumption of alcohol under age 21 are all violations of the Code, as well as the law.
- Albany Police Department will have extra staff out at the beginning of the semester, and will communicate with the Office of Community Standards about student behavior off-campus.
- Community Standards is available to answer questions or provide education on the Code of Conduct, and the University’s expectations for students.
