Staying Safe While Traveling for the Holidays

If you are heading home or anywhere during winter break, a little planning goes a long way.

  • Check weather conditions before driving, especially during snow or ice advisories.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your car with a blanket, water, snacks, and a phone charger.
  • If flying or taking a train, arrive early to avoid delays and last-minute stress.
  • Let a roommate, friend, or family member know when you will be traveling and when you plan to return.
  • Save campus emergency contacts on your phone in case you need assistance while away.
  • Make sure your phone is fully charged before leaving and carry a portable power bank in case of long delays.
  • Check your car’s tire pressure and fluid levels before long drives, especially windshield wiper fluid which is essential in snow.
  • Keep important documents like your student ID, insurance card, and travel confirmations in an easy-to-reach spot.

Winter Heating and Utilities Tips for Off-Campus Students

Heating bills and winter maintenance can surprise first-time renters. Here is how to stay warm and avoid unexpected costs.

  • Keep your thermostat consistent to avoid energy spikes. Small increases are more efficient than drastic changes.
  • Seal drafts using inexpensive weather strips or door sweeps. It makes a huge difference.
  • Avoid blocking radiators or vents with furniture.
  • If you live in an older building, keep cabinets under sinks open during extreme cold to help circulate warm air to your pipes.
  • Know who to contact for heating emergencies and check your lease for landlord responsibilities.
  • Use thick curtains or insulated window liners to keep warm air inside and reduce heat loss.
  • Wear layers indoors and keep cozy blankets around to reduce the urge to turn the heat up too high.
  • Run space heaters only when supervised and make sure they meet safety guidelines to avoid accidents. Unplug them if you aren’t using them, and especially if you are not going to be home.

Building a Support System During Winter Break

Living off campus can feel isolating when many students leave Albany. Here is how to stay connected and supported.

  • Reach out to classmates or friends who are also staying in the area and plan meet-ups or shared meals.
  • Join virtual study groups or social spaces hosted by student orgs during break.
  • Check in with professors if you are finishing final projects from home. Communication is key.
  • Stay engaged with hobbies or creative outlets to help maintain structure when classes pause.
  • Remember that CAPS offers telecounseling options during the break.
  • Follow campus social media accounts or newsletters to stay updated on any winter break activities or virtual events.
  • Make a small routine for your days, even if it is simple, to help support your mental and emotional well-being.
  • Reach out to friends or family for regular check-ins so you stay socially connected throughout the break.

End-of-Semester To-Do Checklist

Before you unplug for break, make sure you have everything covered.

  • Return library books or renew them online.
  • Confirm final exam times and project deadlines.
  • Check your student account for any holds or required forms.
  • Back up important files and coursework.
  • Clean your apartment so you return to a fresh start in January.
  • Make a rough plan for next semester’s schedule and goals.
  • Wash bedding, towels, and laundry before leaving so you return to a clean home after break.
  • Empty the trash and remove perishable food from the fridge to prevent odors or pests.
  • Turn off lights, unplug electronics, and check that all windows are locked before you leave.
