Understanding the cost of attendance

As a public research university, UAlbany costs considerably less than most private institutions while offering the same rigorous academic experience and the same career outcomes.

Determining the cost of attendance

When comparing educational costs, it is important to always be aware of the bottom line — meaning the money you pay for tuition and fees after scholarships and student loans have been applied. To determine how much you’ll need to pay, add up those direct expenses, then subtract all financial aid you’ve been offered.

To determine the cost of attendance, multiply the total credits required for your graduate degree by your tuition rate (see below) and subtract any scholarships and financial aid you have received. Student fees will vary by credit load, so fees should be added to the total after arriving at the Net Cost of Tuition. Visit Per Credit Fee Rates for details on student fees.

Non-residents who are US citizens or permanent residents may establish New York State Residency for tuition billing purposes to reduce the cost of tuition to the in-state rate in their second year and beyond.

Students who plan to enroll full-time (9 credits minimum) in a master’s program will receive a Dean’s Merit Award from the Graduate School. Students must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 to receive the award. See Funding Graduate Studies for more information.

The above are examples of only a few of the degrees offered at the College of Integrated Health Sciences. You will need to calculate the cost based on the number of credits required for your specific degree.

Your Net Cost of Tuition can be reduced even further by adding any additional scholarships you may receive beyond the Dean's Merit Award. While you may receive larger monetary scholarships from other institutions, your actual cost of attendance will be lower at the University at Albany.

The cost of a doctoral education will vary depending upon the program and the number of credits transferred in for advanced standing.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

College of Integrated Health Sciences Scholarships

The College of Integrated Health Sciences offers numerous scholarships, assistantships, and funding opportunities to help you focus more on your education and less on the costs.

Students who wish to be considered for one of these scholarships must submit a complete application for entry into the College of Integrated Health Sciences by January 15. Full-time study (9 credits minimum) is required to receive a scholarship or assistantship.

The School of Social Welfare offers numerous scholarships to highly qualified students each year. Applications for these scholarships open in mid-spring. Matriculated and newly admitted students will receive notification of the application with instruction on how to apply via email.

Scholarships and Assistantships Provided by The Graduate School at UAlbany

Dean’s Merit Scholarships: New York State master’s degree applicants with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher will receive a base scholarship of $4,000, out-of-state domestic students will receive a base scholarship of $8,000, and international master’s degree applicants with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher will receive a base scholarship of $10,000. Full-time study (9 credits minimum) is required. There is no application deadline to receive this scholarship.

Great Dane Scholarship: Awarded to recent UAlbany graduates and alumni with a 3.0 GPA.

GOP Funding: New York State residents who have graduated from an EOP, HEOP or SEEK program are eligible for GOP tuition support. Visit Funding Graduate Studies for more information. Applicants must submit the GOP Application via their SOPHAS or UAlbany application.

Carson Carr Diversity Fellowship Program: Awarded to entering doctoral students. To be considered, students must apply to the College of Integrated Health Sciences by the December 15 priority deadline and submit the Carson Carr supplemental essay by January 15.

Applicants must submit the GOP Application via their SOPHAS or UAlbany application. All questions regarding the Carson Carr Graduate Diversity Fellowship should be directed to [email protected].

Doctoral Student Assistantships and Fellowships

Presidential Doctoral Fellowships for Research Training in Health Disparities: Awarded to entering PhD or DrPH students at the University at Albany who wish to receive trans-disciplinary training in health disparities.

PhD Graduate and Teaching Assistantships: Awarded to accepted PhD students in Biomedical Sciences, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Environmental Health Sciences based on merit. No supplemental application is required. Decisions are made by the individual department and students will be notified by the department if they are selected to receive an assistantship.

Scholarships for NYS Health Department Employees

Full-time salaried employees of a New York State local health department or the New York State Department of Health who are enrolled in a public health graduate program at the College of Integrated Health Sciences may apply for tuition assistance from the Public Health Leaders of Tomorrow (PHLOT) and Public Health Infrastructure Tuition (PHIT) programs. Applicant who wish to be considered for PHIT funding, must also apply for PHLOT funding. PHLOT funding will be applied first and PHIT will be applied second.

Applicants must also pursue and utilize tuition assistance through their employer/union (if available), and must be enrolled in one of the following College of Integrated Health Sciences graduate programs at University at Albany:

Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) – Student Loans for US Students

To find detailed information about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), visit Financial Aid.

MPH students should include in their FAFSA application the need for summer financial aid in their first academic year of study as they typically complete a six-credit internship in the summer between the first and second year of study

Graduate students admitted as "non-degree" are only eligible for federal aid if they are taking approved University at Albany undergraduate courses required for admission into a University at Albany graduate degree program.

What Other Funding is Available to Students?

The College of Integrated Health Sciences provides 8-10 full and part-time graduate assistantship positions to new public health students, open for application in March of each academic year. Students are also employed in part-time jobs, graduate assistantships, student assistant positions, and fellowships with faculty, the NYS Department of Health, the university and community partners. These positions become available throughout the year and students are notified of these opportunities through a central resource maintained by Health Sciences' Office of Internships and Career Services.

Many MPH students receive funding while completing their MPH internship, either through a scholarship that is applied directly to their student account, or as a student assistant paid directly by the internship organization.

New York State offers student positions through the New New York Leaders Program. International students must consult with the International Student and Scholar Services office regarding employment with New York State.
