LLC Research Presentations Span Multiple Languages and Cultures

Spanish TA and PhD student Caitlin Fanning presents a research poster to the U's VP for Research & Economic Development

Faculty and students' ongoing research in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures spans a wide variety of areas across multiple languages and cultures.  LLC showcased five research posters at the Vice President for Research and Economic Development's Listening and Learning Tour 10/26/22, including: "Lone French Nouns in Tunisian Arabic Discourse," "Language Shift in the Heart of Texas," "Lexical Borrowing Strategies Used by Mexican Tabletop Role-Players in Live-Streamed Games," "Complementizer Variation in Ojalá Plus Subordinate Clauses in Puerto Rican Spanish," and "One Story at a Time: UAlbany Student Stories, a Podcast Series."

The podcast series, produced by students, captures oral histories of students who often find themselves on the periphery of higher education and/or society, students for whom English is not their primary language, immigrants, minoritized communities, non-traditional college students, Dreamers, undocumented students, LGBTQ community members and allies, students with disabilities and military veterans.  "The podcasts create solidarity among listeners and [are] a powerful research and teaching tool for building a more inclusive and sustainable society,” said Carmen Serano, Associate Professor of Spanish and Spanish Program Director, who guided their creation.  More on podcasts.  Listen to podcasts.
