How to Join

Five Quad is a student-run, volunteer organization. Students are required to apply and complete training before becoming active members.

How to Apply

Five Quad holds general interest meetings at the beginning of each semester to meet and share information with potential applicants.

University at Albany students and local community members are eligible to join. Applicants must also:

  • attend a general interest meeting

  • submit a written application

  • complete the interview process

Applications will be accepted next at the start of the Fall 2023 semester.

To ensure new members are properly trained, we can only accept applications at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. Students who are selected to join are called members-in-training (MITs).

MITs undergo a semester of training, which includes Five Quad's training weekend, mandatory weekly trainings, a midterm exam, and a written and practical final exam. Successful MITs are then voted into the membership.

Applicants who are not selected are encouraged to re-apply the following semester because we are always seeking more passionate volunteers. Visit our Friends of Five Quad page to learn about other ways to get involved.

Certifications & Training

Five Quad accepts all levels of certification but applicants don't need to have any to be selected as MITs. In fact, more than half our active members joined without prior experience.

We also accept a wide range of majors, so you don’t need to be studying anything in particular to join.

MITS will earn their American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED certifications, and learn Basic Life Support skills during training. They will also have the opportunity to become a state certified Emergency Medical Technician at the Basic level (EMT-B).

Five Quad does not offer New York State EMT training or certifications but assists our members in finding available courses in our area.
