Public Perception of Education a Focus for School of Education Day

Dean Lane gives welcome at SOE Day

Albany, NY (October 22, 2019) — The 5th annual School of Education Day brought together over 200 people—faculty, staff, and student researchers as well as local superintendents, educational leaders, and practitioners from the field.  It was an exciting event that showcased the excellence of our School and helped strengthen the relationship with our community partners.  Some highlights from the event include:

  • We began the day with a Superintendents Breakfast, where 15 local superintendents, along with President Rodríguez and Provost Kim, joined us for a discussion on how to strengthen relationships between UAlbany and local districts.
  • 37 SOE faculty and students, representing all departments, presented during the breakout sessions.
  • 10 posters, representing the work of 32 SOE faculty and students, were presented during the luncheon poster session.
  • 5 members of our Student Leadership Council served as ambassadors at the event.
  • We hosted Early Career Conversations for teachers and leaders.
  • The keynote speaker was award winning pollster and chief researcher for the annual PDK Poll on Public Attitudes toward Public Schools, Gary Langer.
  • The plenary panel included superintendents and leaders of Albany City Schools, Questar III BOCES, Capital Region BOCES, and Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES, as well as our own Alex Pieterse.  (The Schenectady Daily Gazette reported on the panel discussion: Speakers discuss challenges facing education.)
