Mathematics Learning in Latin America and the Caribbean

Dr. Gilbert Valverde

Associate Professor & Director for Global Engagement, Interim Dean and Vice Provost of CIEGS, Dr. Gilbert Valverde contributed his lead-authored chapter to this book just published by the Inter-American Development Bank, whose editorial board included premier US and Latin American mathematics education experts. The book is entitled Learning Mathematics in the 21st Century: Adding Technology to the Equation available in both English and Spanish editions.

In our chapter “Mathematics Learning in Latin America and the Caribbean” we conduct the most recent extant survey of mathematics learning across Latin America and the Caribbean, using multiple sources of empirical evidence. As noted in the book, in addition to my co-authors, I was assisted by two of my graduate students: Maria Khan and Esteban Villalobos.

The book was rolled out at a webinar on August 28, with 500 participants connecting to the event. You can also see that since then the book has had more than 3000 downloads with both languages combined.
