Karan Bashin receiving AI & Society Dissertation Fellowship

We are pleased to announce that Economics PhD student Karan Bhasin has been awarded the AI & Society Dissertation Fellowship from the University at Albany AI & Society College and Research Center.

The fellowship supports doctoral students whose research examines the societal implications of artificial intelligence and promotes the responsible development and use of AI for public good. As part of the program, fellows receive funding and interdisciplinary support to advance dissertation research at the intersection of AI and society.

Karan's dissertation investigates the behavior of professional forecasters using a Bayesian learning framework and applies Large Language Models (LLMs) to extract unanticipated monetary policy shocks from textual data — offering a novel approach to causal inference in macroeconomic policy evaluation.

Karan's research has been featured in The Economist and The Wall Street Journal, and his policy work has appeared in outlets such as the Brookings Institution and VoxEU. He has also held research and policy positions at the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, Empire State Development, and the Government of India.

Please join us in congratulating Karan on this well-deserved recognition!
