Economics Majors Shine at UAlbany Showcase

The inaugural UAlbany Showcase was held on April 27, 2023. Students shared their research, academic work, experiential learning and creative activities. The Economics Department celebrated a remarkable showcase day as economics majors took center stage, presenting their research projects and captivating audiences with their innovative insights. The event brought together a diverse range of research topics, demonstrating the students' exceptional skills and dedication to economics.

Professor Haruka Takayama hosted a session on "Trade and Globalization." Students from her AECO 445 International Trade class presented on various topics, including trade and the environment (by Matthew Aviza, Io Cotter, and Kuhyun Kwon), immigration (by Anthony Cafaro and Michael Toro), and the global production network (by Yizhe Chen and Yeongji Yoo). Additionally, Kylee Steffey presented her master's essay on the impact of the China shock in New York state, supervised by Professor Haruka Takayama.

 Another session, hosted by Professor Chun-Yu Ho, focused on "Horizontal Mergers: The Impacts on Firms and Consumers," featuring students from his AECO 374W Industrial Organization class. A total of 44 student research projects were presented during the poster session.

Moreover, Alyssa Kamara presented her research on the "Growth of Common Ownership among Medicare Part D Providers" under the guidance of Professor Pinka Chatterji. This research has been nominated for the Presidential Award for Undergraduate Research. Allyson Mazariegos and Anna Bednarski also presented their findings on the "Effects of the Russian-Ukraine War on Commodity Prices," supervised by Professor Yue Li.

These presentations showcased the diverse research interests and accomplishments of UAlbany students in the field of economics, emphasizing their dedication to exploring critical economic issues and generating valuable insights.
