Securing Summer Internships

Having a summer internship is a great way to gain work experience as a student.

  • Employers are already hiring for summer internships. The earlier you apply the more likely you are to get hired (aim for applying during February and early March).
  • Handshake is a great tool for finding internships. Sign in using your UAlbany NetID and password, then complete your profile and start applying.
  • Many job boards have expired postings. Apply directly on the company website, if possible. If not, stick to reputable job boards (Indeed, ZipRecruiter, etc.).
  • Make sure your LinkedIn, resume and cover letter are polished. Career and Professional Development at UAlbany is a fantastic resource to take advantage.
  • If you don’t have clothes for interviews, check out Purple Threads, located in the Campus Center in Room 323.
  • Volunteer work can be a great way to build up your resume. Check out Engage UAlbany to see volunteer opportunities associated with the University.
  • You may be able to earn academic credit for an internship.

Navigating a Cold Spring Semester

The beginning of the spring semester doesn't feel like spring at all! Here are some tips on how to make it through the cold start of the semester.

  • Layer clothing. It can be an effective way to stay warm, as well as control your temperature. In addition to a winter jacket, consider wearing a hoodie or a pullover.
  • Pack an extra pair of socks. Ice and snow will start to melt soon, and stepping in a puddle can be very unpleasant.
  • Give yourself extra time to get to class. Winter weather may cause traffic to slow down, so consider leaving 10 to 15 minutes early to account for traffic.
  • Stay hydrated. Winter clothing can keep you too warm at times, so drink a lot of water to stay healthy and hydrated.
  • Be aware of ice patches. They are present both on and off campus. Keep your eye out and stay safe.
  • Use caution with space heaters. Make sure they are not close to anything flammable and turn them off before you leave.
  • Make sure your tires are still good. When the treads wear out you could be more prone to sliding on ice patches. Use a penny to measure tread depth by inserting the penny upside down into the tread. If the treads cover Lincoln's forehead and stops at his eyes, your tires are good. If you can see Lincoln's whole head, it may be time to replace your tires.
  • Apply lotion to your hands regularly. The cold, dry air can cause your skin to crack, leading to irritation.
  • Use the tunnels on campus. Avoid getting caught in the cold!
