With the goal of becoming the first university-based computer to reach a quintillion computations per second, Albany AI will empower university and industry researchers to harness massive data sets to better understand how to automate complex operations, and create teaching and research collaborations with faculty in all disciplines.

The University at Albany today began a new era of teaching and research with the launch of Albany AI, a $200 million public-private supercomputing initiative based out of UAlbany’s soon-to-be-renovated College of Engineering and Applied Sciences building. Buoyed by $75 million in state funding to complete the transformation of the former Albany High School into a state-of-the-art engineering college and fund the construction of a supercomputer, the Albany Artificial Intelligence Supercomputing Initiative (Albany AI) will significantly expand New York’s capacity in this major emerging field.

Students in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences recently took on the challenge of building force tensiometers – a device capable of accurately testing the strength properties of new materials – for the Department of Chemistry's new materials chemistry wing in ETEC.

For UAlbany students Guillermo Mijancos, Joseph Salgado and Michael L. George, engineering is more than just a construction tool. It’s a critical way of thinking about solutions that can benefit our lives. The three electrical and computing engineering majors recently completed their senior capstone project, with a focus on aiding and improving the lives of people living with disabilities.

Eight outstanding UAlbany students will be honored Tuesday with the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, which is the highest award SUNY bestows. Chancellor’s Award winners are selected for outstanding achievements in academics, leadership, campus involvement, community service or the arts.

Nineteen students received small grants last fall to offset expenses directly related to their research or creative projects with University faculty, including attending conferences, purchasing materials and covering tuition for related course work. Spring recipients will be announced next week.

The institute will help train the next generation of cybersecurity professionals for future military and civilian leadership positions.
