Seeking Nominations for College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Faculty Service Award

Dean Altarriba is pleased to solicit nominations for the first annual College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Faculty Service Award. This award recognizes members of the College of Arts and Sciences faculty who have made exceptional service contributions to the College over an extended period of time.

Eligibility

  • The nominee must have been on the College faculty for at least 10 years (not counting sabbaticals or other leave times).
  • The nominee must be a Full Professor at the time of the nomination.
  • The nominee’s service to the College should be characterized by both breadth and depth, with evidence of clear and sustained dedication to furthering the College’s mission.
  • The nature of the nominee’s service must clearly exceed the types of activities that are considered to be part of a faculty members’ standard professional obligation and would typically include service for which the nominee has not been compensated.

Nomination Process

Any member of the College of Arts and Sciences faculty may nominate a colleague for consideration for the award by submitting the following materials via email to Dr. Julia M. Hormes, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Research ([email protected]):

  • A letter of nomination, confirming the nominee’s eligibility for the award and describing in detail the reasons for consideration of the nominee for recognition with the CAS Dean’s Faculty Service Award;
  • Between three and five letters in support of the nomination from any faculty, administrators, staff, or students in a position to speak to the nature and positive impact of the nominee’s service contributions to the College;
  • The nominee’s curriculum vitae.

Nominations are to be kept confidential, and the nominee should remain unaware of the fact that they have been nominated for this award.

All materials must be submitted by Friday, March 25, 2022.

Selection Process

Once nominations are received, Dr. Hormes will convene an Ad Hoc Committee of distinguished faculty representing all areas of the College who will review nominations and make recommendations to the Dean. The award is designed to recognize CAS faculty who embody the highest level of commitment and service to the College, but contributions to their departments, the University, the community, and the profession will also be considered as part of the selection process. Similarly, the focus is on the nominee’s dedication to service. Additionally, noting that service contributions should not have come at the expense of achievement in other professional domains, excellence in teaching and research will also be taken into account, in the selection process.

Award recipients will be announced at the final Council of Chairs meeting of the Spring semester and will also be formally recognized during the Dean’s annual Fall Address.
