SUNY Chancellor Recognizes Dr. Tom Begley’s Research

The Department of Biological Sciences congratulates Dr. Tom Begley as a Williams-Raycheff Endowed Professor and Associate Director of the University at Albany’s RNA Institute on having his research highlighted by SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. during his 2026 State of the University Address.

As part of his remarks on SUNY’s growing leadership in biomedical research and innovation, Chancellor King gave special attention to Dr. Begley’s work efforts to improve treatment options for cancer patients.

In April 2026, Dr. Begley received a $3.9 million NIH R01 grant to support research aimed at helping doctors match cancer patients with the therapies most likely to benefit them. Using advanced computer tools to analyze large amounts of biological data, Dr. Begley and his research team can identify patterns that may help guide more personalized treatment.

Chancellor King noted that this work reflects SUNY’s commitment to advancing healthcare through innovative research. By combining expertise in cutting-edge computational biology, RNA science, and medicine, Dr. Begley and members of his lab are helping to develop new approaches that could improve patient care and provide a better understanding of disease.

The recognition of Dr. Begley’s work during the State of the University Address highlights the important research taking place at the University at Albanythe RNA Institute, and the Department of Biological Sciences. More importantly, through collaborations across disciplines and institutions, UAlbany researchers continue to make discoveries that have the potential to improve healthcare and improve lives.

The Department of Biological Sciences applauds Dr. Begley and members of his lab on this outstanding recognition and their continued contributions to advancing scientific discoveries and innovation.
