Dr. Andrew Berglund Named 2025 Academic Laureate

The Department of Biological Sciences congratulates Dr. Andrew Berglund, Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences and Director of the University at Albany’s RNA Institute who has been named the 2025 Academic Laureate by the University at Albany Foundation. This honor was presented at the 44th Annual Citizen Laureate Awards Dinner of which was held on October 31, 2025, at the University’s Broadview Center.

For more than four decades, the Citizen Laureate Awards have celebrated individuals whose leadership and service in academia, business, and public life. This year’s award recipients include Dr. Berglund (Academic Laureate) along with Thomas Tyrrell and Marcia J. White (Community Laureates). Together, they reflect the University at Albany Foundation’s mission to recognize those whose work strengthens the relationship between higher education and the community.

A distinguished molecular biologist and leader in RNA science, Dr. Berglund has made major contributions to a better understanding of RNA and developing therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative and neuromuscular disorders that includes Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and myotonic dystrophy. His many honors include the President’s Excellence Award in Research and Creative Activities and the UAlbany Alumni Association’s Collins Citizen Award. 

Dr. Berglund is also deeply committed to education and mentorship. As a faculty member in UAlbany’s Department of Biological Sciences, he has inspired and guided students at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels that prepare the next generation of RNA scientists. His leadership at the RNA Institute continues to expand opportunities for collaborative discovery and training in cutting-edge RNA science.

The Department of Biological Sciences extends its congratulations to Dr. Berglund on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for his continued contributions to advancing science and education as well as his continued support to the University at Albany and the broader community.
