Despite the restrictions of the pandemic, University at Albany faculty are finding creative ways to work with valued international partners to further UAlbany’s strategic goal of internationalization.

Increasing recognition of the harms associated with mass incarceration and intensive policing has renewed public interest in the possibilities of abolitionist approaches to responding to crime, including abolition of prisons and police. Still, much of the public is uncertain about the meaning of abolition and its implications for community safety. In this session, our expert panelists will not attempt to neatly define abolition, but will explore the influence of abolitionist thinking on their practical work to transform communities.

The University at Albany’s Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy and the School of Criminal Justice have once again been recognized among the nation’s top graduate programs. Announced by U.S. News & World Report, Rockefeller is ranked 25th overall for best graduate program in public affairs and 5th nationally for best doctoral program in criminal justice.

“In the wake of the assault on democracy that occurred at our nation’s Capitol building on Wednesday, our response to another terrorist event – the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks – provides guidance on how we should respond moving forward,” states Public Service Professor James Steiner in his op-ed article published in Homeland Security Today.

Strategically restructuring and uniting two of its nationally ranked academic units, the University at Albany, SUNY announced that the School of Criminal Justice will join the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy effective June 1, 2020.

His longtime colleagues in the School of Criminal Justice remember him as a remarkable scholar, teacher, mentor, and person, whose voice is deeply needed in today's crucial discussions on police reform.
