Current Research:

Professor Gorman studies how group-based power relations and perceived threat shape the way people understand social difference - the symbolic boundaries separating "us" from "them" - and increasingly, how those same social conditions register in the body. His current work spans the social determinants of chronic pain across countries, the roots of anti-immigrant sentiment and group threat in Europe, support for global cooperation, and the conditions under which people come to see one another as less than human. He primarily uses statistical and computational methods, drawing on cross-national data, and spent several years working and studying in the Middle East and North Africa. His research appears in the American Journal of Sociology, Social Forces, and the Journal of Pain, among others.
