About the International Sociology Honor Society
The University at Albany hosts a chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), the International Sociology Honor Society, dedicated to recognizing and promoting excellence in the study of sociology. Founded in 1920, AKD now includes over 700 chapters worldwide and provides lifetime membership to students who meet its rigorous academic standards.
Membership Benefits
As part of our chapter, students have opportunities to:
- Join a community of scholars dedicated to advancing sociological knowledge
- Participate in mentorship, tutoring, workshops and community engagement activities
- Access professional development resources and networks through AKD’s national organization, including subscriptions to Sociological Inquiry, conference opportunities and award competitions
Eligibility
Membership in AKD is open to Sociology majors, minors and students in other disciplines who have demonstrated strong academic achievement in sociology coursework. Eligible students must:
- Have completed at least four sociology courses at UAlbany
- Be of junior standing or higher
- Hold a minimum overall GPA of 3.3 and a 3.0 GPA in sociology courses
Initiation into AKD requires a one-time lifetime membership fee of $50. Students accepted into AKD are honored at our departmental induction ceremony each year.
