Faculty Expertise and Achievement

Vinny (Vinícius) Lima earned his Ph.D. in Computer and Information Technology from Purdue University in 2025, with a research focus on Digital Forensics and Artificial Intelligence. He also holds a Master’s degree in Computer Forensics and a Bachelor's degree in Network Engineering from the University of Brasília. Besides the academic knowledge, Dr. Lima brings over nine years of experience in law enforcement with the Civil Police of the Federal District in Brazil as a forensic scientist, where he worked in crime scene examination, traffic accident reconstruction, and digital forensics. Throughout his career, he conducted forensic analyses on more than 500 police cases.
His research interests center on the application of Artificial Intelligence, particularly large language models (LLMs), to support police investigations and forensic intelligence. He is especially interested in identifying behavioral patterns in both physical and digital criminal activity. Dr. Lima’s work explores the integration of AI into investigative workflows, with a strong emphasis on ethical, technical, and practical considerations in the criminal justice system. Since his transition from government to academia, he has published many conference and journal papers.
