Throughout my academic career, many people have emphasized the importance of time management as a crucial skill in any field. The ability to balance your time effectively can truly make or break your day and career. When you have a busy schedule, it is essential to allocate your time properly to ensure you are meeting your goals and fulfilling all your roles efficiently.

I am a busy individual who wears many hats in different areas. I serve as a Housing Manager for Residential Life, a Fitness Assistant for Campus Recreation, and a Graduate Ambassador for the Graduate School. Additionally, I am an intern at Albany Medical Center in the Neurology and Movement Disorders Clinic. I also actively serve in my church as a Women's Ministry Leader and Student Organizer. On top of all these responsibilities, I am a full-time graduate student pursuing my MSW. In addition, I still have to make time to be a daughter, friend, and still make time to do things to recharge myself.

  1. Externalize Tasks
It took me a while to find a system that allows me to effectively manage my time and schedule while still being present in all my roles. I have realized that I cannot rely solely on my memory, so I make it a priority to write things down and set reminders for myself. I use a yearly planner that I carry everywhere and a whiteboard calendar where I map out my entire month, including my work schedule, class assignments, and any upcoming events.
  2. Schedule Time
For me, planning my entire month in advance and scheduling specific time slots for tasks is essential. If I don’t allocate time for certain activities, I find that I’m not using my 24 hours effectively. I schedule my workouts, grocery shopping, cleaning and laundry days, study sessions, church meetings, and even social time with friends. Maintaining discipline and sticking to this schedule, along with setting boundaries with my friends, allows me to enjoy my day while ensuring that I remain active, engaged, and present in everything I do.
  3. Keeping Consistent
The key to having strong time management skills is maintaining discipline. I have a set bedtime and make sure I am in bed by 10:00 PM every night. My phone automatically switches to 'Do Not Disturb' mode, allowing me to get adequate sleep. I inform my friends and family about this so they can respect my boundaries. Additionally, I wake up every morning at 4:40 AM to work out until 6:00 AM, as this is the time I dedicate to myself. This routine sets the tone for my day and allows me to focus on my personal well-being without interruptions.
