About the COR

The Council on Research is responsible for the periodic review of research initiatives and allocation of research funding within the institution. It is also responsible for making research policy recommendations to the University Senate. As further expanded upon in the Charter of the University Senate, Section  X.5.3. –X5.7.

Initiatives

The Council advises the Vice President for Research and Economic Development (VPRED) on matters including, but not limited to, the establishment and continuance of Centers, Institutes or Laboratories as guided by the University Policy on Organized Research Units. The Council makes recommendations to the University Planning and Policy Council and the Senate when it determines that major new research initiatives and commitments may significantly affect University organization and resource allocation.

The Council is responsible for all policies that guide research procedures conducted by University members with regard to the wellbeing of animal and human subjects, safety standards, and compliance with other regulatory standards.

The Council, which may include ad hoc committees that include expertise from faculty who are not members of the council, review applications for internal campus research support mechanisms including Faculty Seed Funding and Graduate Student Funding via the Benevolent Association Research Grant.

FRAP-A Awards Review

Faculty Research Awards Program-Category A

Review applications/proposals and make recommendations for funding to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development via COR. The committee may also review program guidelines and procedures and submit recommended changes to the Chair of COR.

Committee on Centers, Institutes and Specialized Research Laboratories

Responsible for guiding the COR’s actions as charged by the University Policy on Organized Research Units. In coordination with the University’s assessment/evaluation initiatives, the committee will recommend improvements to the current procedures for evaluating organized research units.

Excellence in Research & Creative Activities Review

Chair: 2026-2027 to be determined

Propose short-list of possible external committee members, prioritizing former awardees, active principal investigators, and/or full professors. Review nomination packets and make recommendations to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development for the University’s Excellence in Research & Creative Activities Award. Also, review nominations and make recommendations to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development for the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Scholarship and Creative Activities and the SUNY Research Award.

Researchers Liaison Committee

Chair: 2026-2027 to be determined

Consider improvements to the campus procedures related to grants management. Provide recommendations to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development, via COR, on methods to improve investigators’ capacity to efficiently apply for external funding and manage grants received.
