Description:
The goal of the webinar is to help practitioners recognize early communication difficulties (for example, trouble orienting to a speaker, difficulty with back-and-forth conversation) in children with ASD and to provide them with basic strategies for facilitating communication at the earliest stages. The program will cover early communication skills and strategies of joint attention, means-end and reciprocity in language and play. The webinar is for practitioners who are eager to learn skills to facilitate early communication and who are working with a child with autism spectrum disorder who is an early, emerging communicator. The webinar will offer applied, evidence-based strategies for engaging children in language and play.

Target Audience: Practitioners who are working with a child with autism spectrum disorder who is an early, emerging communicator

Objectives:

Participants will be able to:
•   identify aspects of early communication development and how it relates to later language development
•   identify basic communication strategies for engaging a child in communication through three aspects of early language development (reciprocity, joint attention and means-end)
•   identify reciprocal strategies relevant to communication and play for prelinguistic children
