Safety at Home and in the Community
Challenging behaviors can lead to safety concerns for individuals with autism, their siblings, their parents, and community members. This workshop will focus on proactive strategies to address safety at home, in the car, and in the community. Nicole Simon will also discuss how to develop a safety plan to help manage crisis situations.
Following this presentation participants will be able to:
1) Identify at least three common safety concerns for autistic individuals in the home, car, and community settings.
2) Describe at least two evidence-based tools or strategies that can be used to enhance safety for autistic individuals in each of the following settings: home, car, and community.
3) Identify at least three resources that support safety planning and risk mitigation for autistic individuals across all three settings.
Presenter Bio:
Nicole Simon, EdM, LABA, BCBA
Senior Behavioral Consultant, Lurie Center for Autism
Ms. Simon is a behavior analyst with over 25 years of experience using the applied behavior analysis (ABA) framework to care for children and adults with autism spectrum and related disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, and severe challenging behaviors in home, school, residential, hospital, and community settings. She has a Master of Education from Harvard University Graduate School of Education specializing in Risk and Prevention.

Toilet Training Success: Practical Strategies for Children with Autism
This webinar focuses on why toilet training may be difficult for children with autism or other disabilities and how to approach it in a way that will be most successful for your child. Using concrete examples, families will learn how to meaningfully set goals, break down the steps of the process, communicate clearly, increase motivation, and problem solve when challenges arise. An action plan will be provided to complete during or following the webinar.
Following this presentation participants will be able to:
1) Determine an appropriate current goal for toilet training based on your child's current readiness signs.
2) Create a plan for the toilet training process based on this goal.
3) Identify supports to communicate toileting expectations, increase motivation for your child, and problem solve once toilet training has been started.
Presenter Bio:
Whitney Loring, Psy.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Pediatric Psychology, and Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Vanderbilt Kennedy Center TRIAD
As part of Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders (TRIAD) for 16 years, Dr. Loring’s current responsibilities include developing and conducting training, consultation, and coaching for caregivers, educators, and providers regarding evidence-based assessment and intervention strategies for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and related disabilities. Her research interests include developing and evaluating intervention strategies that address behavioral pediatric concerns (e.g., sleep concerns, toileting difficulties) for children with autism spectrum disorders and the effectiveness of various models of caregiver coaching and consultation.

The Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD Albany) offers these seminars at no cost to participants living in New York State through a grant from the New York State Education Department. The funding is administered by The Research Foundation for SUNY. The out-of-state resident registration fee is $15.
Policies:
Attendance policy: In order to receive a certificate of attendance or CEU certificate, participants must attend the entire session and complete a pop-up Zoom attendance poll during the webinar to receive credit. Attendance is tracked through your unique Zoom link. Partial credit will not be awarded. Upon competition of the entire session, attendees will receive an email with an evaluation form to complete. After the evaluation form is completed, attendees will receive a certificate of attendance via email. CEU certificates will be emailed within 48 hours of the webinar completion.
Cancellation Policy: Cancellation must be made 24 hours before the start of the event to receive a refund for CEU registration fees. Please send cancellation request to [email protected]. We do not allow same-day cancellations. In the unlikely event that we need to cancel the webinar, we would provide a refund to each participant.
Continuing Education:
There is a $5 registration fee for each CEU selected.
Each organization/entity uses their own calculation to determine the number of CEUs based on contact hours. As with all continuing education, the attendee should verify CEU requirements by their professional organization and/or state licensure board.
