Meta Descriptions are now required

Drupal Editors,

When creating a new Drupal webpage or editing an existing one, a meta description of the page will now be required

What is a meta description?

A meta description is a brief summary of a webpage's content that may appear in search engine results, like Google. It helps users understand what a page is about and can influence their decision to click on a link. Meta descriptions enhance our site's performance in search engines and ensures that our content is more engaging for users.

What you need to do

  • When creating a new web page or editing an existing page, please be sure to fill out the new required “Meta Description” field located below the page “Title” field.
  • The meta description should be a concise summary of the page content, with a maximum of 150 characters including spaces.
  • It should include relevant keywords to improve search engine visibility.

Tips on writing compelling meta descriptions

  • Be Descriptive and Specific: Clearly describe what the page is about. Avoid vague language and ensure the description accurately reflects the content.
  • Use a Call to Action: Encourage users to click on your link with phrases like "Learn more," "Discover" or "Find out."
  • Make It Unique: Each page should have a unique meta description. This prevents search engines from seeing your content as duplicate and improves user experience.
  • Reflect the Page Content: Ensure the meta description aligns with the actual content on the page.
  • Highlight Benefits: If applicable, mention the benefits or unique features of your content. This can convince users to click the link to your page instead of others.
  • Avoid Keyword Stuffing: While keywords are important, overloading your meta description with them can reduce its effectiveness.
