Presenter(s): Breanna Mejia, Kaydie Gariba, Tajiana Howard
Showcase Advisor: Barbara Fane
Abstract: In hospitalized adult med-surg patients, how does manual blood pressure measurement, compared to automated blood pressure measurement, affect the accuracy of blood pressure readings?
Accurate data collection is important in improving patient outcomes, such as identifying chronic or acute conditions in hospitalized patients. Blood pressure measurement is essential for patients with a history of hypertension, or even when the patient is experiencing a critical event, such as sepsis or shock. Obtaining precise readings is crucial in establishing the patient’s baseline blood pressure, guiding safe medication adjustments, and avoiding misdiagnosis. This project evaluates existing research comparing the difference between automated and manual blood pressure measurements based on technique, patient condition, and device reliability. Inaccurate or inconsistent readings can directly influence clinical decision‑making and compromise the effective management of hospitalized patients.
