Matthew Pate

Matthew Pate, PhD, is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at the University at Albany, where he has taught since 2010. He holds a PhD from the University at Albany along with graduate degrees in criminal justice, sociology, and landscape architecture, as well as a BA in history. 

His scholarship spans comparative and international criminal justice, state fragility, corporal punishment, and policing, including books such as State Fragility Around the World: Fractured Justice and Fierce Reprisal and Corporal Punishment Around the World, with a forthcoming volume, Comparative Justice in Fragile States. 

Beyond academia, he has served as a subject matter expert for the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime, a trainer and technical advisor to federal and state law enforcement agencies in the United States and abroad, a frequent reviewer for leading academic journals and publishers, and as a nationally syndicated columnist, reflecting a career that bridges rigorous scholarship with applied criminal justice practice.
