About

John McCluskey is the Senior Executive Director of the School of Criminal Justice.  His research is centered on two broad areas.  The first involves body-worn cameras (BWCs) and their influence on policing and the criminal legal system.  This includes research supported by the Bureau of Justice Assistance that examines the application of artificial intelligence to BWC with the primary aim to examine the reliability of common tools to translate speech to text, diarization of speech, and object detection through computer vision.  The second is a long-standing collaboration with Dr. Byongook Moon that examines teacher maltreatment and victimization.  Supported by the National Institute of Justice for nearly a decade, this work has used longitudinal survey data to explore the correlates and consequences of teacher victimization.

These two strands of research are joined by the common theme of procedural justice (PJ) as a framework for evaluating police performance and the influence of BWCs, and for assessing how school administrative responses to victimization reflect PJ principles.

John has benefited from an education that started at UAlbany’s School of Criminal Justice, where he earned a BA, MA and PhD. Since then, he has been fortunate to collaborate with exceptional colleagues in criminal justice, data science, applied mathematics, as well as with many talented professionals in the field. He continues to learn from the insights and patience of these peers, who generously tolerate his wide-ranging ignorance and curiosity.
