Center for Healthy Aging

From cells to community: Turning discovery into everyday healthy aging

About

The Center for Healthy Aging is situated organizationally within the Institute for Social and Health Equity (ISHE), a University-wide interdisciplinary hub that advances innovative research, workforce development and community collaboration to promote healthy aging and longevity.

The Center builds on UAlbany’s strategic vision to lead the nation in aging-related science, translating cutting-edge findings into practice and improving the lives of older adults.

Our Mission & Vision
Our Mission & Vision

The vision of the Center is to improve all aspects of aging, to prevent age-related diseases, and to decrease the economic burden of age-related pathological and social disorders.

The Center’s mission is to promote healthy aging and prevent age-related diseases by:

  • Serving as a hub for cutting-edge research, training and comprehensive programs
  • Bringing researchers and community partners together to advance knowledge about aging
  • Translating that new knowledge into practice, education and workforce development

Research Areas

We start with the biological innovation in aging science at the cellular level, validate findings in the lab and then co‑design social and behavioral innovations in aging services with older adults and community partners.

Insights from the field, in turn, inform the next round of laboratory questions, creating a virtuous cycle of innovation.

Biological Innovations in Aging Science

Pioneering research into the mechanisms of aging at cellular, tissue and organismal levels, developing cutting-edge solutions to address age-related degeneration.

Our efforts include:

  • Testing engineering, cellular and molecular solutions for aging
  • Training the next generation of scientists and engineers in advanced technologies, with a special emphasis on pharmacological, nutritional and social interventions to promote longevity
  • Creating models to study degenerative and age-related conditions, benefiting the SUNY community and beyond

Social & Behavioral Innovations in Aging Services

Fostering new education and training programs in the social and behavioral sciences, designed to build a skilled workforce for careers in aging services.

Key areas include:

  • Curriculum development and workforce training for careers in social work, psychology, public health, mental health counseling and more
  • Research and implementation of evidence-based interventions for healthy aging, addressing caregiving, social isolation, elder abuse and promoting overall well-being

Resources

Coming Soon: Resources for Researchers

The Center for Healthy Aging aims to support academic and community-based research focused on aging, health equity and innovation.

As we continue to grow, we will curate and provide access to valuable resources, including datasets, measurement tools, collaborative opportunities and grant development support.

Additional Resources

New York State Master Plan for Aging (MPA): The MPA is a 10-year, cross-sector initiative aimed at transforming the state's systems to better support older adults and people with disabilities. Grounded in principles of equity, healthy aging and community integration, the plan serves as a blueprint for building an age-friendly New York for all generations. The final report was launched in June 2025.

National Center to Reframe Aging: Developed by the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), the Reframing Aging Toolkit offers evidence-based messaging to shift the public narrative about aging. It helps professionals communicate more effectively about aging in ways that reduce ageism and promote inclusion.

Healthy Longevity Framework: The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH)’s Healthy Longevity Framework outlines a public health approach to adding not just years to life, but life to years. It emphasizes prevention, equity and multisector collaboration to improve health and quality of life across the lifespan.
