
LACS PhD Student Andrea Miranda Co-Curates "Keeping Seeds in the Hair" at MAC Panamá
Latin American, Caribbean & U.S. Latino Studies PhD student Andrea Miranda co-curated the exhibit "Keeping Seeds in the Hair" displayed in the contemporary art museum, MAC Panamá. This exhibit "is an investigation that emerges from MAC Panamá’s permanent collection, in which the curatorial team, comprised specifically for this project, developed an open process of shared learning and common doing. A disparity in abilities, origins, and positions that we braid over time with different questionings, concerns, and intuitions, with the intention of connecting with each other and, furthermore, making space for other lives."

Assistant Professor Gabriel Hetland of Latin American, Caribbean & U.S. Latino Studies was featured in the Q&A section of the Latin America Advisor, a daily publication of The Dialogue. Andrea Miranda, PhD Student contributes to renovation of Panama Canal Museum
The Panama Canal Museum is undergoing a massive renovation project of its exhibitions. The research of this renovation has been done by the PhD student Andrea Miranda, who also wrote the exhibition script. Miranda’s work provides the Museum with the necessary historical data in order to present its collection of artifacts in a truthful and detailed manner.
Dr. Londoño's Book Wins 2020 Outstanding Book Prize
Dr. Johana Londoño's book Abstract Barrios: The Crises of Latinx Visibility in Cities won the 2020 Outstanding Book Prize from the Latina/o Studies Section of the Latin American Studies Association.

LACS PhD Students Ruth Murcia and Eric Macias Honored
Ruth Murcia, incoming LACS PhD student, is one of the recipients of the Presidential Doctoral Fellowship for Research Training in Health Disparities. The Fellowship is for four years starting with the 2021-2022 academic year. As a PhD student, Ruth plans to focus her research on domestic workers in New York State. LACS congratulates Ruth on this notable achievement!
Eric Macias, a PhD Candidate in the Latin American, Caribbean, and Latina/o Studies Department at the University at Albany, received honorable mention from the Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship, a prestigious and highly competitive fellowship that recognizes students who “show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.” LACS congratulates Eric on receiving this honor!
