Stay Safe this Semester - What to Know

Friday, August 22, 2025

Dear Great Danes,

Welcome to the start of another great year at UAlbany! We hope all students have a wonderful time as the semester begins.

Albany has a lot to offer, and we encourage students to enjoy it — but like any city, staying safe and being a good neighbor matters. Whether you're going out or hosting friends, follow these off-campus guidelines:

  • Avoid large parties and social gatherings.
  • If you choose to host a small and responsible gathering, keep the guest list limited to people you know and turn away people you do not know.
  • Do not enter the homes of people you don’t know.
  • Stay in well-lit areas.
  • Always walk in groups (three or more if possible).
  • Stay alert to who is around you and your surroundings.
  • If you feel unsafe, leave the area and call for help.
  • If you are of age and choose to drink, stay aware of your surroundings — intoxication increases risk.
  • Never accept drinks (alcoholic or otherwise) from people you do not know or drink from open containers.
  • Call 911 or UPD if you see something concerning.
  • Download the UAlbany RAVE Guardian App for extra peace of mind.

Important information to remember:

If you choose to attend or host a large, disruptive event, you will not only face potential criminal penalties in the city of Albany, but also sanctions as outlined in the University’s Community Rights & Responsibilities.

Please take note of the parking restrictions in the city of Albany as they will be enforced on weekends. Cars in restricted areas will be ticketed or towed — follow all No Parking signs.

Always remember, your safety begins with you. If you are in need of help, call the University Police Department at 518-442-3131.

Wishing everyone a safe and successful semester,
