Bringing the Tools of Social Work Research to the Vision of Racial Equity
Racial inequality in the U.S. child welfare system is well known. Decades of research shows persistent overrepresentation of Native American and African American children in child welfare services, as well as disparate negative outcomes for children and families of color.
Alumni Sharing Expertise: A Free Continuing Education Workshop
The Learning From Alumni continuing education workshop series, where School of Social Welfare alumni are the presenters, returns this spring semester with a panel discussion. Time Capsule Captures SSW Student-Led Journal
As part of the University at Albany's 175th anniversary celebration earlier this year, a time capsule from 1964 was opened - revealing contents from student life more than fifty years ago. This week, UAlbany showcased the contents of a new time capsule that will go into a cornerstone at Dutch Quad. Each department was asked to submit an item for the capsule, in which the School of Social Welfare opted to include the student-led journal, Critical Conversations, as one of the capsule's contents.
The time capsule will most likely be opened 50 or more years from now, meaning that the UAlbany community of the future will be able to read and hold a copy of the first ever SSW student-led journal.
Creating Community
What do you envision when you think about a perfect community? Fresh air, nice landscape, busy markets, smiles on people’s faces as they greet their neighbors? Creating a vibrant community is an exciting dream for many of us, and yet it is not easy to actually make it happen, even when investments are made.
On-Air, Online, Anytime... Our Social Work Radio Talk Show
The School of Social Welfare's radio show, The Social Workers Radio Talk Show, is currently available in podcast format. This new and alternative listening method became an option this past academic year and has been a successful way to enhance the base of listeners. The show, which began only as a live talk show on WCDB 90.9FM, is hosted by Dr. Eric Hardiman and Alyssa Lotmore, LMSW. The mission is to use the medium of radio to educate and enlighten the university and extended communities about social work trends and current practices provided by social workers.
