What was one of the most meaningful experiences you had during your time in the MPA program?

The Fellowship on Women & Public Policy, through the Center for Women in Government & Civil Society, was life-changing. In this program, I gained valuable professional skills, knowledge of New York State government, and a strong network that opened the door for my current job. I also formed friendships and mentor relationships that will last a lifetime.

Where did you complete your internship requirement and what knowledge, skills, and abilities did you develop as a result of this experience?

I had a wonderful internship with the NYS Comptroller’s Division of State Government Accountability, which evaluates government programs to ensure they meet New York’s policy goals. In joining this team of dedicated public servants, I strengthened my project management and public speaking skills, and broadened my understanding of the complex machine that is State government.

What specific skills or experiences through the program have prepared you for your transition to post-graduate employment?

I am so grateful for the opportunity to expand my data analysis capabilities in this program. Data is becoming exponentially more important in the policy world, and I feel prepared to meet this growing need in my work. The MPA also improved my problem-solving and ability to work well on a team.

What kind of opportunities are you considering for post-graduate employment?

I am currently working in the NYS Senate on Majority Conference Services and loving it! Happily, I plan to stay on this team for the next few years and see where it takes me into my future of public service.

What advice do you have for students who are considering or pursuing an MPA degree?

I recommend leaning into the data analysis education that is offered in this program. These skills make MPA grads especially valuable in the public sphere — it will open doors for you like it has for me!
