Rock Your Career: Scott Janke, MPA '21

Scott Janke

While completing the MPA program, Scott Janke, MPA '21 worked as a Senior Associate for Government Relations at the New York State Association of Healthcare Providers (NYSHCP) and subsequently as the Director of Governmental Affairs at the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS).

What was one of the most meaningful experiences you had during your time in the MPA program?

Due to my part-time status as a graduate student, I spent four years in the Rockefeller MPA program. While I had many memorable moments over the years, the most rewarding experiences included meeting new student cohorts, learning about their professional interests, and eventually seeing them accomplish their career goals following their completion of the MPA program.

Where did you complete your internship requirement and what knowledge, skills and abilities did you develop as a result of this experience?

My internship requirement was met through my work experience. While completing the MPA program, I worked as a Senior Associate for Government Relations at the New York State Association of Healthcare Providers (NYSHCP) and subsequently as the Director of Governmental Affairs at the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS). At times, there was substantial crossover between my professional work and the lessons being taught in class. Although I did not complete an internship while in the MPA program, my part-time status as a student allowed me to apply the knowledge and skills I developed in the classroom to my professional work in real time.

What specific skills or experiences through the program have prepared you for your transition to post-graduate employment?

The MPA program does an excellent job offering a diverse set of courses that enable students to pursue their specific career interests within public service. Of significant importance to my career was developing skills related to analyzing and distilling complex policy issues into an easily understood message, as well as developing the ability to analyze policy with greater social, political, and economic awareness.

Where are you currently employed and what is the focus of your position?

In my role as Director of Governmental Affairs, I advocate on behalf of HANYS members in Albany by working closely with New York State elected officials, regulatory entities and policymakers to protect and further the interests of New York’s hospitals and health systems.

What advice do you have for students who are considering employment in the public sector and pursuing an MPA degree?

Public and non-profit employment offers immensely rewarding experiences. The MPA program enables students to develop the diverse skill set needed to be a successful manager in public service and confidently engage complex societal issues.
