Reduced Cooling on Campus
The University’s Central Chilling Plant is experiencing service issues that are limiting our capacity to cool many Uptown Campus buildings. In order to preserve cooling for research and critical spaces, we will not be able to adequately cool other spaces, and temperatures in the impacted buildings listed below could get uncomfortably warm.
With the extremely warm temperatures expected for the rest of this week, employees who can work remotely are strongly encouraged to do so through Sunday, June 23. Supervisors should support this flexibility. This will allow the University to consolidate activity wherever possible, reduce cooling needs and concentrate on critical areas.
Impacted buildings
From Thursday, June 20, to Sunday, June 23, the following Uptown Campus buildings will have limited cooling and may become uncomfortably warm:
- Arts & Sciences
- Catskill
- Humanities
- ITB office spaces
- Lecture Center
- Performing Arts Center
- Pine Bush (Bldg 30/formerly Earth Science & Mathematics)
- Parts of the Science Library
- Service Building A
- Social Science
- Taconic
- University Hall
- University Library
Despite this curtailment, the University will remain fully operational. Adequate staff will be available to handle normal office demands, whether in person or remotely.
Employees who must report to campus
Essential employees whose roles require them to be on campus should dress appropriately for the anticipated conditions.
Leave accruals
Employees whose work cannot be done remotely and who are not essential personnel may use leave accruals. Supervisors are encouraged to approve such requests where possible.
If you have any questions about your facility, please call 518-442-3400 or email Zach Newswanger, associate vice president for facilities management, at [email protected].
Thank you for your cooperation as we prioritize cooling in critical research areas until we can bring the plant back up to normal capacity.
