Update: Heat/Hot Water Repair Complete
Update: 6:32 p.m., March 2, 2024
The repairs to the Uptown Campus’ high-temperature, high-pressure water system have been successfully completed. As of 6 p.m. the system has been turned back on.
Given the size of the system, it will take several hours to ramp back up to full capacity. That means heat and hot water will return to impacted facilities (listed below) gradually throughout Saturday night, and sooner in some places than others.
We anticipate full restoration by 10 p.m.
5:45 p.m., February 29, 2024
Heat and hot water service to much of the Uptown Campus will be shut down at 8 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2024, to conduct an emergency repair to the campus’ high-temperature, high-pressure water system in the tunnels.
It will take several hours for the system to cool down before work can safely begin, and we anticipate being able to turn it back on within 24 hours of turning it off.
While the internal temperatures of impacted buildings will decrease throughout the day Saturday, given the warmer forecast and the concrete construction of the buildings we expect that they will retain sufficient warmth throughout the repair.
Please help us keep the buildings comfortable by closing all windows until the work is complete.
The following facilities will be open but have no heat or hot water:
- Academic Podium (all, including libraries)
- Campus Center
- State Quad
- Colonial Quad
- Dutch Quad
- Indigenous Quad
- University Hall
- Massry School of Business
- P.E. Building
- Broadview Center (will have hot water)
Dining Halls Will Remain Open
The Dining Hall kitchens in Indigenous Quad and State Quad will be open and continue to have hot water throughout the shutdown. Retail dining in the Campus Center will remain open with some modifications; please consult UAlbany Dining for details.
Bathrooms Will Be Operational, Hot Water Will Not
Running water and toilets will work throughout the duration of the repair; however, there will be no hot water available in these locations until the repair is complete.
Locations Not Impacted
The following locations will not be impacted by the shutdown:
- Empire Commons
- Liberty Terrace
- Freedom Apartments
- ETEC
- Life Sciences Research Building
- UPD
- Boor Sculpture Studio
- Hudson Building
- UAB/MSC
- Downtown Campus (all)
The Empire Commons Community Room will be open to all students from noon to midnight on Saturday.
ETEC will be open to all students from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
Tunnel Access Restricted
Access to the tunnels in the corner of the Podium near the Humanities and Social Sciences buildings will be restricted until the repair is complete. Please avoid this area until further notice.
