Graduate Assistant, Facilities

Job Description 

The Graduate Assistant of Facilities is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of all Recreation and Wellness facilities, with a focus on the new Colonial Wellness Center, scheduled to open in Fall 2024. Emphasizing staff supervision, facility and equipment management, and communication, this position will be actively involved in service facilitation, operations, student support, and leadership.   

Position Specific Duties 

  • Supervise student assistant staff assigned to the Colonial Wellness Center, including training, scheduling and daily oversite. 
  • Maintain inventory of entry desk supplies, replenishing when needed. 
  • Utilize communication channels such as Microsoft Teams and Relay devices to disseminate information to student staff. 
  • Assist with payroll, performance evaluations, and other managerial tasks as assigned by the Assistant Director. 
  • Conduct rounds of Colonial Wellness Center, ensuring all spaces comply with safety and maintenance standards. 
  • Maintain inventory of equipment available for Colonial Wellness Center group reservations and individual use items and assist with distribution of equipment when needed. 
  • Assist with the Recreation and Wellness risk management and safety program through scheduling American Red Cross BLS Courses for student staff and maintaining certification records.  

General Duties 

  • Serve as recreation facility manager 1-2 nights per week and 3 weekends per semester. 
  • Assist in the oversight of Recreation and Wellness facilities including supervision, policy enforcement/revision, safety, and risk management. 
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of training programs and resources for Recreation and Wellness student staff. 
  • Attend department, division, and university wide programs as needed. 
  • Serve on department, division, and university wide committees as needed.  

Required Qualifications  

  • Enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Albany for the 2024-2025 academic year. 
  • Demonstrated leadership experience. 
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification, or willingness to become certified.  
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends. 
  • Ability to work 20 hours per week. 
  • Must meet University at Albany Human Resource employment guidelines for Graduate Assistants. 
  • Must be in good standing as it relates to the Office of Community Standards Community Rights and Responsibilities. 

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Experience supervising staff.

Job Description 

The Graduate Assistant of Fitness is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of the Recreation and Wellness fitness centers including the Fitness Center at Broadview and the Fitness Center at Indigenous Quad. Emphasizing staff supervision, facility and equipment management, and communication, this position will be actively involved in service facilitation, programming, student support, and leadership.

  • Supervise student assistant staff and/or student leadership staff assigned to Broadview and Indigenous Quad Fitness Centers including training, scheduling and daily oversight.

Graduate Assistant, Intramural Sports

Reports To: Assistant Director of Programming 

Job Description 

The Graduate Assistant of Intramural Sports is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of the Recreation and Wellness Intramural Sport program. Emphasizing staff supervision, communication, and program development and execution, this position will be actively involved in the facilitation of services and programs for the University at Albany student population. 

Position Specific Duties 

  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of the Intramural Sport program including the development and execution of all intramural sport leagues.  
  • Assist with the development and execution of the Special Olympics Unified Sports program. Serve as the on-sight administrator for the Unified Sports program and showcase events. 
  • Supervise student assistant staff assigned to the Intramural Sport program including recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling and daily oversight. 
  • Utilize computer-based scheduling software and web-based programs to coordinate activities and communicate with staff (i.e Microsoft Teams and IMLeagues). 
  • Maintain an active presence at Intramural Sport programs and events. 
  • Aid in the development of a program calendar, intramural captain’s meetings, special events, and sport specific trainings.

Job Description 

The Graduate Assistant, Marketing is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day marketing and communication goals for Recreation and Wellness. With an emphasis on creativity, organization, and innovation, this position will have an active role in overall department facilitation, programming, student support, and leadership.   

Position Specific Duties 

  • Assist in the design and implementation of a departmental social media campaign with a focus on the new Colonial Wellness Center and related programs. 
  • Collaborate with professional and para-professional staff to advertise departmental programs through flyers, social media, Recreation and Wellness website, and other marketing platforms. 
  • Regularly review and provide feedback on department website focusing on schedules, registration information, membership information, and general information. 
  • Design and implement information boards in all Recreation and Wellness facilities.  
  • Regularly research and stay up to date on social media trends and platforms as it relates to marketing to traditional college-aged students.  

General Duties

Graduate Research Assistant, NYS Youth Justice Institute

The New York State Youth Justice Institute (YJI) is seeking to hire a Graduate Research Assistant to begin Fall or Summer 2024. 

The YJI is a collaborative partnership between the University at Albany and the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. Housed at UAlbany’s Division for Research and Economic Development, the YJI’s goals include disseminating information about evidence-informed youth justice practices, assisting with implementation and assessing efficacy in existing youth justice programs, and conducting cutting-edge research to advance the science and practice of evidence-based initiatives. This is a part-time position beginning June 1st 2024 or later based in Albany, NY at the NYS Youth Justice Institute. The YJI currently adopts a hybrid schedule, with remote work allowed on Mondays and Thursdays. The YJI may be able to cover in-State tuition up to 6 credits per semester and offers a stipend of up to $29  per hour contingent on experience. The successful candidate will work 20 hours/week during the academic year, with the possibility of increasing to 25 hours/week in the summer. YJI staff, including students, have access to a host of software and other equipment (e.g. laptops, printer), as well as dedicated office space at Draper Hall 107-118.

Graduate research assistantships at the YJI are a dynamic experience that offers both breadth and depth in the realm of youth justice research, intervention, and policy work. The Graduate Research Assistant position offers several excellent training opportunities, including collaboration with senior and junior members of the team, exposure to university-community research partnerships, and cross-institutional networking.

Position summary

Under the supervision of the YJI’s Director of Research, and in close collaboration with other team members, the Graduate Research Assistant will assist in myriad activities, such as:

  • Engage in quantitative and/or qualitative research. 
  • Prepare systematic literature reviews.
  • Translate scientific findings to a general audience, including data visualization.
  • Prepare reports and other manuscripts for publication and/or presentation.
  • Participate in grant writing.
  • Participate in meetings with State and local-level partners and stakeholders and attend relevant training sessions.
  • Contribute to research components of the YJI newsletter. 
  • Lead project-based teams comprising graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Review internship applications by graduate and undergraduate students and provide mentorship to junior scholars.

Minimum requirements:

  • Must be a SUNY Albany student currently enrolled in a doctoral program in Data Sciences, Public Policy, Public Health, Criminal Justice, Social Welfare, Sociology, or a related field. Advanced students are preferred but all applications that meet the minimum requirements will be given consideration.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond effectively to multiple assignments and priorities supporting multiple projects and activities.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, oral and written communication skills, and advanced interpersonal and relationship-building skills working in a team environment.
  • Experience with and/or strong interest in mentoring undergraduate students through research projects. 
  • Deep sense of humor, ability to embrace diverse perspectives, demonstrated commitment to excellence and social justice, and enthusiastic interest in learning new research or policy topics.
  • The successful candidate is also flexible, has a high tolerance for ambiguity, and can be trusted with confidential or sensitive information. 
  • Candidates must address explicitly in their cover letter their ability to work with a culturally diverse population.

 

Preferred skills/experience:

  • Experience conducting original and/or evaluation research, be it quantitative or qualitative.
  • Data visualization experience (see more on this below).
  • Experience in grant writing.
  • Experience/interest working with government agencies and/or the non-profit sector. 
  • Knowledge of juvenile justice, child welfare system, and/or emerging adulthood research and policy in the United States is not required, but preferred.
  • Knowledge of best practice literature, evidence-based programming, and implementation science is not required, but preferred.
  • Experience working with web-based survey tools (e.g., Qualtrics), virtual conference applications (e.g., Zoom, Webex, Microsoft Teams), and data analysis and/or visualization software (e.g., Stata, NVivo, Tableau) is not required. The successful candidate, however, should be interested in learning one or more of these tools on the job and be prepared to contribute to the data collection, analysis, and dissemination for several YJI projects.
