Fatima Mabrouk

Fatima A. Mabrouk, PhD, MSW, is an Assistant Professor at the University at Albany School of Social Welfare. Her scholarship examines how racism and racialized organizational dynamics shape the experiences, well-being and professional lives of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color women helping professionals (e.g., social workers, nurses, case managers, etc), particularly within nonprofit and behavioral health organizations. Her research is grounded in an intersectional and structural understanding of race, gender, organizations and social work practice.

Dr. Mabrouk’s dissertation examined racial microaggressions experienced by Black/African American women social workers in nonprofit mental health organizations in New York City. Her broader research draws on Racial Battle Fatigue, and Minority Stress frameworks to examine the ways organizational cultures, policies, and interpersonal interactions reproduce racial inequities in the social work profession. Her current scholarship includes research on reporting behaviors and responses to workplace racial discrimination, digital narratives and social media discourse, and the experiences of racialized social workers within organizational settings. She is also interested in developing interdisciplinary and community-engaged research that translates social work scholarship into organizational and institutional change.

As an educator, Dr. Mabrouk is committed to preparing social work student scholars to critically examine the structural conditions that shape clients’ and communities’ lives. She has taught across undergraduate and graduate social work programs, with courses focused on social justice, diversity, human behavior and clinical social work practice. Her teaching emphasizes critical reflection, intersectionality, cultural humility practices, and connecting theory to the lived experiences of communities.
